Sea Urchins is in the process of launching a magazine targeted at the youth of today focussed on the oceans, marine life, destinations and environmental awareness.

The main driving force behind Sea Urchins is Samantha Hewitt who is a PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) scuba diving instructor and Marine Biology Graduate. She is on a young enterprise program for the Prince's Trust who have been a huge help with advice and guidance with this project.

As mentioned above, the ethos behind the magazine is to inspire young people about the ocean and conservation. We want to expose this audience to the exciting side of nature in a fun and informative way.

The magazine will have fun elements such as comics, competitions and games. It will also feature articles on ocean news, sustainability, destinations and travel information. There will be articles on certain animals, weird and exciting marine and environmental facts and lots of fun interactive elements. There will also be a new character introduced each week that will be involved in the comic strip.

The intention is also to involve youth and schools in the content and ongoing development of the magazine. There will be a committee of young magazine readers formed to (amongst other activities) discuss and review new books, DVDs, TV shows on a variety of marine subjects. Sea Urchins is currently running a competition to find a non-diving representative. Entries letting Sea Urchins know why it should be you should be sent to sam@seaurchinsmag.com.

As a launch platform, we have arranged celebrity endorsement for the magazine. Stacey Solomon (3rd in the X factor, winner of I’m a Celebrity...get me out of here, Celebrity Mum of the year and the face of the supermarket Iceland) is in the process of learning to scuba dive with Sam and London School of Diving.

We know that Stacey has wanted to learn to dive for quite a while as she and Sam (who are step sisters) have been talking about it since they were children themselves! Stacey is really enjoying the PADI Course and is almost finished!

The course is being conducted in conjunction with PADI ,the London School of Diving , Aqualung ,Ocean Visions and Project Aware who are all fully involved and supporting the project. Other top level brands in the scuba industry such as Mike's Divestore are also involved. The course will conclude with an exciting event held at LSD’s purpose built dive centre in Chiswick, West London. We are planning this event for the 24th May 2011.

Sea Urchins has already had involvement commitments and interest from a variety of sources. Environmental groups such as the Shark Trust and Bite Back together with a range of travel companies and brands from the marine scuba diving industries have all expressed a strong interest in advertising and contributing. There has also been media and press interest from TV, magazine and newspaper source.

Triumph Over Adversity

We didn't ask too many questions when we helped Paul Burns get webbed gloves, and a wetsuit that he could modify to go on a diving trip. He's an amputee, which you would not guess from his laid back, open, and confident attitude. After a great trip in the Red Sea he dropped us an email to say he was telling his story on the BBC. But he gave us all inspiration and made us feel that life maybe wasn't too bad after all.

As a former soldier, he recalls how he survived an IRA Bomb at Warren Point and went on to become the first disabled member of the elite Red Arrows Parachute display team.

CATHX Dive Torch - Read the Dive Magazine Review

EVERY NOW and again, we receive an item of kit that breaks the mould - a piece of equipment that has been precision engineered and oozes quality. The Euphos handheld lamp from Cathx Ocean falls into this category.

From its Teflon-coated marine-grade alloy body to the smoothness of the thumboperated rotary switch, nothing has been compromised in its manufacture. It's not just the build quality that's good, either: it has plenty of well-considered features and delivers an illuminating 1,250 lumens. To put that into perspective, that's about the same amount of light as that generated from a typical halogen car headlight.

The Euphos features some neat and revolutionary concepts, the first being the switch. It is operated by rotating a springloaded outer collar about ten degrees either clockwise or anticlockwise. You either do this quickly or slowly - a kind of switch Morse code, if you like - which turns the torch on or off, adjusts the four levels of power, puts it in strobe or SOS mode, and locks it for transit. It takes a little getting used to, but after a couple of dives, we got to grips with it.

The light itself is generated by six LEDs, and you get around 75 minutes' burn time on full power or up to a whopping ten hours on the lowest setting of 150 lumens (about as bright as a good back-up torch). When you approach the end of the battery's charge, the torch automatically reduces power to give a maximum duration using the reserve charge.

Another clever feature becomes apparent when you switch it off. Each time the LEDs are extinguished, a smaller LED glows either green, amber or red for around ten seconds, denoting the battery status. This same LED and colour sequence is also deployed when charging - all very neat. Charging the batteries is carried out by through-the-case connectors, meaning all seals remain intact, and as the LEDs have an expected life of more than 50,000 hours, effectively this torch is sealed for life.

In the water, the Euphos didn't disappoint and really illuminated the magnificent plumose anemones at Raglan's Reef on the Manacles, which are particularly spectacular as this time of year on a spring tide. Amazingly, you get all this in a relatively small form factor - it's a mere 185mm long and weighs in at just 450g. After several RIB dives and a couple of shore dives, the case was completely unmarked, which is also testament to the build quality.

This is as close to a perfect diving lamp as I think you will find on the market. There's just one small problem - the price. Is anybody going to shell out nearly 700 quid for it? That £200 more than the Metalsub KL1242 umbilical, which matches its performance, is probably even more robust, but is a bit more bulky. Only time will tell, but if you do fork out that much, at least you will have the joy of knowing you have a superb piece of kit.

Each year, tens of millions of sharks are killed by Earth's most dangerous predators - humans. Too many of them fall victim to the cruel and wasteful practice of shark finning - the act of removing shark fins and discarding the often still alive shark overboard.

The season and location for this itinerary have been specifically chosen to maximise the possibility of observing sharks in the Red Sea.

This trip will be accompanied by our very own resident Shark Expert - Dan Struthers.

Throughout the week, Blue O Two's expert dive guides will conduct seminars giving divers the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the biology and behavior of sharks within the Red Sea. There will also be a chance to learn about globally endangered marine species and what we as divers can do to aid their protection.

Big Brother

A 400 metre long island offering fabulous wreck diving and wall diving. The wreck of the Numidia lies on the northern tip between 10 and 80 metres. Little Brother

Boasts a very high concentration of life within a very small area. Fan coral forests, overhangs, hard and soft corals in a variety of astonishing colours… and of course there are plenty of fish! Daedalus

Divers can sample some of the excellent diving to be found along the Cornish coast. The British Sub-Aqua Club will be giving non-divers the chance to try out scuba for the first time and will be hosting snorkelling tuition in one of the two pools that have just been built as part of Pentewan Sands’ brand-new Seahorse Centre.

The festival offers a wide range of events, speakers, films, bands and exhibitors. Exhibitors cover the spectrum of all things underwater, from kit manufacturers to travel companies as well as the major diving training agencies including BSAC and Padi.

As one of the UK’s best-value festivals at £40 for a weekend, including a meal on Saturday night (with couple and group discounts for advance bookings and day ticket options available – under-16s go free if accompanied by a ticket-holding adult), there will be plenty to do in addition to the diving.

Festival-goers can see the winning finalists of the British Underwater Image Festival sponsored by Cameras Underwater – the UK’s biggest and most prestigious underwater video and stills photograph competition; and can also take part in Saturday’s Splash In photography contest.

Over the course of the weekend there will be six music acts, kicking off with the Friday night Life on Mares party featuring girl band Eden and acoustic duo The People’s String Foundation.

Divers should also keep an eye out for the 10 silver stars that have been placed on various local dive sites. Find one and they can exchange them for prizes at the DIVE magazine stand. People can also take advantage of Pentewan’s beautiful beach and the fantastic new facilities.

For those with kids, there’s the opportunity to go to one of the circus skills workshops or learn to dance street-style with Britain’s Got Talent semi-finalist dance group Flava. Children and adults will also enjoy the cutthroat antics of the Pirates of St Piran, who will be playing their traditional instruments and putting on a sword-fighting display.

British Divers Marine Life Rescue will also be on hand to give a demonstration of how to rescue a stranded dolphin. Using a water-filled life-size model, the BDMLR will show what it takes to save a beached cetacean.

On Sunday there is a Caribbean party hosted by the Cayman Islands. Tickets to this event cost an additional £5 per person and include entry to see the film Cayman Went, a rum tasting, a Caribbean meal and a reggae band. The band’s second set will be open to everyone. Tickets to this event are limited to 350 people and can be bought upon arrival at Dive Fest.

M1 Dive Mask from Hollis Tech

Finally Dan our despatch manager got to go diving.

Dan has been suffering withdrawal symptoms all winter -Dan went from snorkelling every day with Tiger Sharks to slaving it out in our warehouse making sure everyone got their online deliveries on time - he is still not sure what is more nerve racking.

So when Tom from London School of Diving mentioned Vobster Quay - Dan was donning his Drysuit before the car was started. We asked him to put a couple of pieces of kit through the paces and here is what he has to say -

M1 Mask from Hollis

I’ve never thought too much about dive masks in the past. If it fits, and looks good, I’ll take it. At Mike's we constantly talk about the comfort and field of vision as the key aspects to any mask purchase. 'Suck in and see how it seals is' our Mantra !

I thought that the term 'St Gobaines Glass' was straight out of the latest marketing college (or perhaps a new trappist monk Belgium Beer). The idea that different glass in the mask affects colour and clarity is almost a foreign thought to a lot of people. Surely glass is glass? How naive I was!!

Hollis Tech has rapidly become a leading name in the technical diving world. With 'Black' being the buzzword for any technical diver the Hollis Tech M1 dive mask is a no nonsense, great fitting black dive mask ! It has a single lens frame with easy to use (even with gloves - it was 3 Degrees) adjustable mask clasps fitted to the skirting, so the mask can fold down flat (making it a pefect good quality spare as well ). It’s a simple, comfortable, well made bit of kit, but what truly sets it apart from other similar price masks is the Saint Gobain Diamant Crystal lens. Unlike tempered glass the Saint Gobain is supposed to give clear and un-tinted vision underwater.. and I can assure you it does !

I was really shocked at the difference this glass makes; the colour on my dive was stunning. Everything looked clean, and there was no tint to the usually greenish water. I was genuinely amazed!

Being a solid black mask the M1 will appeal to underwater camera enthusiasts and tech divers alike, but personally I would take this mask diving with or without a camera. I really was taken in by it. It prices in at around forty quid, and offers great value for money !

To find out if your Suunto Dive computer is compatible please click here

All you have to do is go to DAN, where after registering you will be given a DAN I.D. number. Enter this I.D. number into your personal settings in Suunto Dive Manager.

After this simple set up, you will be able to send your dive logs directly to DAN. Highlight the required logs, go to File and click on the DAN logo and your logs will be sent directly to DAN, helping them improve diving safety for all of us.

Suunto Dive Planner

The Suunto Dive Planner - a new addition to Suunto Dive Manager PC software version 3.0.0 and higher - is designed to simplify the planning of dive profiles, gases, and back-up plans. The easy-to-use graphical planner allows you to try variations of depth, time, gases, and partial pressures without having to continually recalculate. The planner calculates all changes instantly and presents the results on an easy-to-read graph.

Planning your dive profile and gases

As you plan and simulate different dive profiles, the dive planner creates ascent profiles based on your selected gases. By adjusting your decompression gases, you can see what effect the changes have on other parameters like decompression time and partial pressure.

When ready, you can simply transfer information relating to planned gases, and other dive-critical data, from the PC to your compatible dive computer with the included USB cable. This conveniently removes the need to copy all the calculations onto a slate. But if you prefer to take a slate in addition to your dive computer, simply print out your dive plan with the software.

Once you're happy with your plan, you can also use the dive planner to create back-up plans. As you create different scenarios, missing a gas change or sharing a tank with a buddy for example, your profile is changed accordingly.

Mixing gases and comparing dives

The dive planner also gives you partial pressure and continuous flow gas mixing instructions for your planned dive, which you can print out and take to a dive shop if you're not mixing yourself.

The Suunto Dive Planner enables you to plan dive series based on your actual dive profiles - not planned dive profiles - making the plans for later dives in the series more accurate. The planner also allows you to compare the planned dive and the actual dive and supports the analysis of up to eight gases. This helps you pinpoint elements of both your planning and diving that may need some fine-tuning, meaning you can make future dives even more successful.

On our recent trip down to Devon I couldn't but help thinking what a strange, strange world the dive business is. Oceanic - one of the UK's largest dive equipment suppliers is based in a landlocked town in Devon, and here we are at the Oceanic Seminar - with 60 of the UK's leading scuba retailers at a golf resort in the middle of the country. Perhaps this was a cunning ploy to lessen the distractions - like - sunshine, sea, fun and good diving so that we could concentrate on the new product side of things, well it worked and Oceanic have got such an exciting new range this year, it was just as well. Here are a few of their most exciting new developments -

Gone are the days of one dive computer for all - with the Dual algorithm you can customise the computer to fit your dive profile and personal preference. Jeff Loflin was a guest speaker at the event. Jeff did an amazing talk on the benefits of Sidemount diving - Jeff is one of those typical go getting yanks that you can't help but like and admire - even with that accent !

Being an avid cave diver, Jeff uses the sidemount technique to protect the cave structure, ease of bouyancy and the obvious advantages of streamlining. Jeff now wants to bring this into mainstream recreational scuba diving. With his manner of 'doing things properly' Jeff has designed a course, submitted it to PADI and is now well on his way to being a one man crusade to changing the way the world dives.

I must admit I did start to yawn at the mention of sidemount but when I saw the pictures of a couple of seven ltrs under each arm and away you go - I started to sit up straight in my chair - something so simple - move the tanks from your back to under your arms but yet it started to make perfect sense - it was one of those moments when you think why hasn't someone done this before - yes I know sidemount diving has been in the UK since the 60's but in a sort of DIY kind of way and always in conjunction with twins or singles on your back.

This is the beauty of Jeff's technique - there is nothing on your back ! I might be an early convert due to my slipdisk but with over 80% of the population suffering from some kind of back ailment - that is a pretty big market ! But anyway I won't bleat on much more as Jeff's own website explains it beautifully - but I am still surprised at how excited I was - and everyone else in the room. The regulators will come in ready made packs for left and right side. Sidemount courses will be run at Vobster from the 14-19 of March - call now for full details. It is quite brave of Suunto replacing the Gekko, it has been the best selling entry level dive computer in the UK since we can remember. So when heard the news we were slightly concerned that this might be just another dive supplier letting all the fame go to their head and over-engineering what is already a great product.
So we breathed a huge sigh of relief when we found out that the only real difference (other than the groovy name - Zoop is short for Zooplankton - the stuff Whalesharks eat ) between the Gekko and the Zoop is a backlight and the ability to download your dive data to a PC via a Suunto PC download cable - the two most lacking features on the Suunto Gekko - so bring it on we say !

Don't like doing a backward roll - or using the lift to get back on the boat after a dive - then look no further !
The primarily operating profile would have the vessels launched from a surface maintenance vessel, where they will quickly travel on the surface to near the designated working area, and then completely submerge to operating depth using electric motors for propulsion and manoeuvring.

The outer tubes will normally be open, and can be closed with simple valves and vents. Contained within these tubes will be an inflatable inner tube that will only be inflated underwater to provide positive buoyancy for re-surfacing. An underneath compartment will contain the main fuel tank and powerful lightweight batteries. This will be capable of being flooded to assist submerging and to maintain stability underwater.
The crew will all be wearing scuba and breathing equipment, and will also be carrying the necessary tools and equipment necessary for the task in hand. All crew will be trained as helmsmen, and will be able to carry out any function in the use of the vessels at all stages of its operational profile.

Means of exit and egress: The vessel is designed to allow the occupants to easily enter and exit through the open canopy roof and is constructed entirely from marine grade aluminium, with standard transverse and longitudinal framing.

The O'Neill J-Type wetsuit has to be the warmest, coolest wetsuit we have ever seen. Usually with suits this thick the styling leaves a little to be desired but not with this beauty.

In the frigid waters of Northern California Jack O’Neill decided to do something about the freezing conditions that were thwarting his passion for surfing, some fifty years later the brand that is O’Neill stands tall within the surfing world. Crossing over to the diving industry was inevitable, and with more money, experience, and research invested in wetsuits (all be it for surfing) than any of us divers could dream of, it wasn’t to be an unwelcome addition!

Testing wetsuits day in day out in the Santa Cruz swells these boys no what the cold is. It’s unsurprising then that the J-Type is pound for pound the warmest diving wetsuit on earth, and probably the entire universe. Double fluid seam welds, firewall insulation, and the code red zip, are all innovative ways to keep in warmth, and keep out water. The suit has an internal farmer john style piece attached to the whole suit. This gives effectively a core thickness of 12mm on the torso, and 7mm on your arms and legs. The seals are O-ring style, and super comfortable as well as effective. All these features come together to give you a 12/7 hooded wetsuit that’s drier than wet, and as robust as any suit out there. At £273.06 it’s one of the most competitively priced 12/7mm wetsuit being made, and in our eyes here at Mikes it’s definitely one of the best.. So here’s to Jack!! The O'Neill Men's 7mm J-Type Fluid Seam Weld (FSW) full wetsuit delivers "serious cold water technology" in a comfortable, low bulk package. The 7mm J-Type FSW wetsuit offers the ease of J-type entry/closure system with the minimal bulk, seal, and convenience of a one-piece hooded full suit. With a built-in, full-torso 5-millimeter Firewall envelope, the 7mm J-Type Dive suit boasts 12-millimeters of core insulation providing added warmth exactly where you need it. The neoprene fabric is strong, stretchy, and supple, behaving like a second skin in the water.

Thanks to O'Neill's double-sided Fluid Seam Weld (FSW) and stitchless seam construction, the suit is 100 percent sealed. O'Neill welds the neoprene layers of the suit together without stitching so that water cannot leak through tiny holes left in the fabric. About O'Neill

Sometime around 1952, Jack O'Neill opened the first surf shop in a garage across the Great Highway. Fourth Element Subxero Undersuit

The SubXero has been developed for use underneath membrane and trilaminate drysuits and all independent testers have rated it as the warmest undersuit they have tried. Windproof, and waterproof. the suit consists of a jacket and salopette or 'farmer john' giving maximum protection to the body core. It will also continue to provide thermal protection if it becomes wet, either by a leak or more fundamental suit failure. The outer material is a trilaminate material comprising a nylon/polyester outer and microfibre inner, bonded to a breathable, but waterproof membrane. The inner material is a 400g shearling fleece, which provides high performance thermal protection and wicks moisture away from the skin. The SubXero has been designed with the dive and the surface interval in mind. Practical pockets double as vents during the dive to help prevent air being trapped in the suit, cuffs at the wrists and ankles are adjustable and a large vented patch on the arm has a wind proof backing to prevent windchill when not wearing a drysuit, but allowing air to escape from the auto dump when diving.

Arm Vents

The arm vent is made of a stiff mesh material, ensuring that it will allow easy air release, through the shoulder dump, without interfering with the dump valve. The interior fabric at this point has a windproof lining, which prevents windchill through the arm vent during the surface interval, making the jacket useful in its own right.

Pocket Vents

The pockets on the jacket and salopettes are zipped for security, but the pocket lining is a mesh, allowing the pockets to be opened to act as vents during the dive. This helps to prevent air becoming trapped and speeds up the process of dumping air from the dry suit.

Removable Crotch Strap

The removable crotch strap helps ensure that the jacket remains in place and does not ride up during the dive. The strap is attached with pinch clips and can be easily removed after the dive.
